Pharmacotherapy

Pharmacotherapy is the treatment of a disease with prescribed medication.

In the absence of contraindications, pharmacotherapies such as varenicline and bupropion, are effective aids in conjunction with behavioural support, and should be recommended to patients who smoke and show a dependence on nicotine. Choice of the pharmacotherapy is based on clinical suitability, efficacy and the patient's preference.

However, these medications and methods may not work for everyone. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners recommends that for those who have failed to quit smoking using first line therapies, and are still motivated to quit smoking, may be suited to nicotine vape products.
